Who doesn’t love a classic hot dog? It’s the ultimate comfort food, perfect for picnics, game days, or just a quick bite on the go. But what if I told you there’s a way to elevate this beloved snack to gourmet status? Enter: Pretzel Dogs!
Pretzel Dogs are exactly what they sound like – hot dogs wrapped in pretzel dough and baked to golden perfection. The result? A delicious marriage of savory sausage and soft, chewy pretzel goodness. Trust me, once you try these, you’ll never look at hot dogs the same way again!
So, what makes Pretzel Dogs so irresistible? Let me break it down for you:
The Pretzel Dough: First things first, let’s talk about that pretzel dough. It’s soft, it’s chewy, and it’s infused with that distinct pretzel flavor thanks to a quick dip in a baking soda bath before baking. This special treatment gives the dough its signature golden color and that irresistible hint of saltiness.
The Hot Dog: Of course, we can’t forget about the star of the show – the hot dog itself! Whether you prefer classic beef franks, spicy sausages, or veggie dogs, there’s a Pretzel Dog variation for everyone. Just make sure to use high-quality hot dogs for the best flavor experience.
The Baking Process: Once your hot dogs are nestled snugly in their pretzel blankets, it’s time to bake them to perfection. Pop them in the oven until the pretzel dough is golden brown and beautifully puffed. The aroma alone will have your mouth watering in anticipation!
Versatility at Its Finest: Another reason to love Pretzel Dogs? They’re incredibly versatile! While the classic version with a beef frank is always a hit, you can get creative with your fillings and toppings to suit your taste preferences. From cheese-stuffed hot dogs to bacon-wrapped delights, there’s no limit to the delicious combinations you can create. Get creative and customize your Pretzel Dogs to suit your taste preferences.
A Fun Cooking Project: Making Pretzel Dogs is not just about the end result – it’s also about the process. Whether you’re kneading the dough, wrapping the hot dogs, or anxiously watching them bake in the oven, there’s something undeniably fun and satisfying about bringing these tasty treats to life in your own kitchen. It’s a great activity to do with family or friends, and the payoff is oh-so-delicious.
Perfect for Any Occasion: Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue, cheering on your favorite sports team, or simply craving a snack to enjoy during movie night, Pretzel Dogs are always a crowd-pleaser. They’re portable, easy to eat with your hands, and guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face. Plus, they’re just as delicious served hot out of the oven as they are at room temperature, making them the ultimate party food.
Whether you’re hosting a party, craving a quick snack, or just looking to indulge in some serious comfort food, Pretzel Dogs are always a good idea. So why not whip up a batch today and treat yourself to a taste sensation like no other? Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!

hourIngredients
1 can or bottle of beer, room temperature
1 tablespoon white sugar
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 (.25 oz) package active dry yeast
4 1/2 cups bread flour
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg yolk
1 tablespoon water
10 cups water
2/3 cup baking soda
1/4 cup kosher salt, divided or to taste
12 hot dogs
Directions
- Heat the beer in a saucepan over low heat until it reaches 110 degrees
- Combine the warm beer, sugar and 2 teaspoons kosher salt in a bow. Sprinkle the yeast on top, and let stand for 5 minutes until the yeast softens and begins to form a creamy foam.
- Place the bread flour and butter in a bread machine. Add the yeast mixture, then select dough cycle.
- Preheat over to 425 degrees F.
- Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Beat egg yolk in a small bowl with 1 tablespoon water and set aside.
- Stir baking soda into 10 cups water in a large pot until dissolved and bring to a boil
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly oiled surface and roll into a 10 x 20 inch rectangle.
- Cut the dough into 12 1-inch strips then wrap each strip tightly around a dry hot dog in a spiral, pinching the edges to seal, leaving the ends open. About half an inch of hot dog should peek out of each end of the dough wrapper.
- Drop 2 or 3 dough-wrapped hot dogs into the boiling water for 30 seconds.
- Arrange the boiled hot dogs on the prepared baking sheets. Brush each pretzel do with the egg yolk mixture and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 salt.
- Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
